Why Long Strip Materials Are Not Like Granules
Most multihead weigher technology is developed and optimized for granular products: coffee beans, frozen peas, nuts, and hardware fasteners. These products share a key physical property — they are discrete, roughly equidimensional, and flow freely under gravity and vibration. Noodles and soft strip materials share none of these properties, and the difference matters at every stage of the weighing process.
- Tangling: Long, flexible strands interlock with each other during feeding and in the hopper. A mass of tangled noodles does not separate into individual portions under vibration — it moves as a clump, making consistent portioning impossible without mechanical intervention.
- Bridging: When noodles or strips are fed into a hopper, they can span the opening rather than falling through it. This bridging effect stops product flow entirely, requiring operator intervention to clear the blockage and restarting the weighing cycle from zero.
- Bending and deformation: Aggressive vibration straightens and then re-tangles flexible strips in unpredictable ways. The product shape entering the hopper may be completely different from the shape exiting it, making weight-to-volume relationships unstable.
- Discharge blocking: Standard hopper gates are sized for granular product. A noodle strand that bridges the gate opening at the moment of discharge prevents the hopper from closing cleanly, causing weight errors and mechanical wear on the gate mechanism.
- Moisture and stickiness: Fresh noodles, bean sprouts, and kelp strips carry surface moisture that causes strands to adhere to each other and to metal surfaces. As moisture transfers to the feeder and hopper surfaces, product flow becomes progressively less predictable over a production shift.
- Portion consistency: With free-flowing granules, the weigher selects from many small hoppers to hit a target weight within a tight tolerance. With tangled strip materials, the effective "unit" being weighed is a clump of indeterminate size — making the combinatorial weighing logic that standard machines rely on far less effective.
How Specialized Weighing Reduces Blocking
A noodle combination weigher addresses the physical challenges of strip materials through design changes that prioritize controlled product movement over throughput speed:
- Hopper design: Noodle weigher hoppers use wider gate openings and smoother internal profiles than standard hoppers. The wider opening reduces the probability of bridging; the smooth profile reduces surface adhesion for moist products. Some designs use a bucket or tray format instead of a cone hopper to hold strip materials in a defined orientation before discharge.
- Feeding rhythm: Rather than continuous vibration, noodle weighers use intermittent or pulsed feeding that allows product to settle between cycles. This reduces tangling on the feeder track and gives the weighing system time to stabilize the load cell reading before committing to a combination.
- Discharge angle: The angle and speed of hopper gate opening is tuned for strip materials. A gate that opens too fast creates a sudden drop that tangles product mid-air before it reaches the timing hopper. A controlled, angled opening allows strips to slide out in a more organized mass that maintains its shape through the discharge path.
- Controlled movement instead of aggressive vibration: Standard weighers use high-amplitude vibration to move product quickly. For long strip materials, high amplitude causes tangling and surface damage. Noodle weighers use lower amplitude with longer stroke to move product forward without agitating it — the difference between sliding a bundle of noodles and shaking it.
Typical Applications
Specialized noodle and strip material weighers are appropriate for any product where length, flexibility, or surface moisture makes standard granular weighing equipment unsuitable:
- Fresh noodles: High moisture content, surface stickiness, and flexible strand structure; require gentle handling and frequent cleaning of contact surfaces
- Dried noodles: Brittle when dry, prone to breakage under aggressive vibration; require controlled feeding to maintain strand integrity through the weighing process
- Vermicelli and glass noodles: Very fine strand diameter makes tangling and bridging more severe than with standard noodles; require specialized feeder geometry
- Bean sprouts: Short but irregular shape with high moisture; tend to clump and bridge in standard hoppers; require smooth, wide-opening discharge gates
- Kelp strips and seaweed: Wet, flexible, and highly adhesive; require stainless steel contact surfaces with minimal crevices and full washdown capability
- Cooked strip products: Cooked noodles, cooked vegetable strips, and prepared meal components with sauce or seasoning; require equipment rated for wet cleaning between batches
- Soft strip food products: Licorice strips, fruit leather, and confectionery strips; require gentle handling to maintain shape and prevent surface damage
How to Match Weighing with Packaging
Selecting the right noodle weigher is only part of the solution. The weigher must be matched to the downstream packaging machine to produce a finished pack that meets quality and presentation standards. Key factors to evaluate at the system design stage:
- Bag width and product length: The finished bag width must accommodate the longest strand in the portion without folding or compressing it against the side seal. If product length exceeds bag width, strands will be forced into a U-shape during packaging, creating an untidy pack and potential seal contamination.
- Portion weight and density: Noodle portions have lower bulk density than granular products of the same weight. The bag volume must be sufficient to hold the portion without overfilling, which causes seal failures, or underfilling, which creates excessive headspace and poor pack appearance.
- Film type: Moist products require film with adequate moisture barrier properties. For fresh noodles and wet strip products, confirm that the selected film specification is compatible with the product's moisture content and shelf life requirement.
- Sealing space: Noodle strands that enter the seal zone during packaging cause weak seals and pack failures. The timing hopper and film tube geometry must be designed to keep product clear of the seal area during the sealing cycle. This often requires a longer film tube or a product guide at the infeed.
- Manual arrangement before automation: For some noodle products — particularly fresh noodles sold in premium retail formats — automated weighing is combined with a manual arrangement step where operators orient the weighed portion before it enters the packaging machine. Evaluate whether your product and pack format require this step, and design the line layout to accommodate it without creating a bottleneck.
