Before You Buy a Packaging Machine: 7 Things to Confirm
Buying a packaging machine is a capital decision that shapes line output, labour cost, and giveaway for the next eight to ten years. Most disputes between buyers and equipment suppliers are not caused by poor machines, they are caused by specifications agreed too quickly. Before you buy a packaging machine, the following seven points should be confirmed in writing, ideally with sample trials and a signed technical annex.
1. Confirm how your product actually behaves
Bulk density, particle size, moisture, oil content, static, and fragility decide the dosing method long before they decide the bagger. Free-flowing granules such as rice, nuts, or frozen vegetables suit multihead weighing feeding a vertical form-fill-seal machine. Fine or aerated powders such as milk powder, flour, or protein blends behave very differently and need auger dosing with a controlled fill, which is why powder-specific platforms like the KL-300 and KL420 powder VFFS series exist alongside granule models. Send real product samples, not a datasheet, and ask for a recorded trial.
2. Confirm throughput in bags per minute, not in shifts
Ask for rated speed at your exact bag size, fill weight, and film, and ask what speed was sustained over a continuous run. A machine rated at 70 BPM on a 100 g bag may run 35 BPM on a 1 kg gusseted bag. Entry and mid-range vertical baggers such as the KL320, KL420, and KL520 cover typical small-to-medium bag duties, while high-speed platforms in the KP series, including the KP-420 and KP-520, are built for continuous-motion output where the line has to keep pace with upstream processing. Size for peak season demand plus realistic downtime, not for the annual average.
3. Confirm bag format and seal type
Pillow, gusset, quad-seal, flat bottom, and premade doypack are not interchangeable on one frame. Forming-tube machines such as the KL600, KL620, KL820, and KL-1250 build the bag from roll film, which gives low film cost and high speed. Premade bag systems, including rotary pre-made bag and vacuum premade bag machines, deliver better shelf presentation with zippers and spouts at a higher cost per unit. Decide the retail format first, then the machine.
Vacuum and gas flushing
If shelf life depends on residual oxygen, specify the target O2 percentage and confirm it with a gas analyser during factory acceptance testing, rather than accepting a general claim that the machine supports nitrogen flushing.
4. Confirm film compatibility, including recyclable structures
Mono-material PE and PP recyclable films have a narrower sealing window than traditional laminates. Confirm the sealing jaw type, temperature control accuracy, and whether the machine supports servo-driven jaws that hold pressure and dwell time consistently. Ask the supplier to run your intended film, including the printed reel with your eye mark, during the trial.
5. Confirm sanitary design and ingress protection
For food contact, specify SUS304 as a minimum, with SUS316L for corrosive or high-salt products. Confirm the IP rating of the frame and control cabinet against your cleaning regime, since a washdown line needs a very different build from a dry powder room. Also confirm the presence of tool-free removable contact parts, sloped surfaces, and accessible weld finishes, all of which affect daily cleaning labour more than any spec sheet figure.
6. Confirm changeover time and operator skill required
A line that changes SKU three times a day loses more to changeover than to cycle speed. Ask how many forming tube sets are included, whether recipes are stored in the HMI, and how long a trained operator takes to switch bag width. Servo-driven film feed and stored recipe parameters shorten this considerably compared with mechanical cam machines.
7. Confirm total cost of ownership, not just the quotation
Total cost of ownership includes film waste during startup, giveaway from weighing tolerance, spare parts pricing, sealing element life, energy use, local service response time, and the cost of an unplanned stop during peak season. Request a spare parts list with prices for the first two years and clarify commissioning, training, warranty terms, and remote diagnostic support before the contract is signed. Also confirm electrical standards, voltage and frequency, CE or other certification, and whether inline checkweighing and metal detection are integrated or supplied separately.
Building the line, not just the machine
Modular planning keeps future capacity open. A common path is to start with a single vertical bagger and manual case packing, then add inline inspection and secondary packaging as volume grows. Confirm that the control architecture and the frame footprint allow that expansion before you buy a packaging machine, because retrofitting conveyor heights and discharge positions later is usually more expensive than specifying them correctly at the outset.
