Material feeding is the starting point of every packaging cycle. What Is a Z-Type Conveyor?

A Z-type conveyor is a conveying system that combines vertical lifting and horizontal transport in a single compact unit, tracing a Z-shaped path from the material intake point to the discharge outlet. Unlike a straight inclined conveyor, the Z-type configuration allows material to be collected at floor level, lifted vertically, and then discharged horizontally into a hopper or machine inlet — all within a minimal floor footprint.

In a packaging line, the Z-type conveyor serves as the connection between upstream material supply and downstream weighing, filling, or packaging equipment positioned at a different height. It is part of a broader range of feeding and conveying systems used to automate material handling between packaging stations.

  • Vertical lifting with smaller footprint: Compared with a long inclined conveyor, the Z-type achieves the same lifting height within a significantly smaller floor area — an important advantage in space-constrained factory environments.
  • Better connection between equipment at different heights: The Z-type geometry allows the discharge point to be positioned precisely at the inlet height of a weigher, filler, or packaging machine, regardless of where the material supply is located on the factory floor.
  • Gentle handling for some materials: For fragile or breakage-sensitive products such as puffed snacks, coated confectionery, or delicate frozen pieces, the enclosed bucket or belt design of Z-type conveyors reduces impact and tumbling compared with open inclined conveyors.

When specifying a Z-type conveyor for your packaging line, confirm the following with your supplier:

  • Material size and flowability — particle size, shape, density, and tendency to bridge or clump affect bucket size, belt pitch, and drive configuration.
  • Required conveying height — the vertical distance between the intake and discharge points determines the Z-type frame dimensions and motor specification.
  • Feeding capacity — required throughput (kg/h) must match the consumption rate of the downstream weigher or packaging machine to maintain a steady feed without overflow or starvation.
  • Floor space — available footprint at the intake and discharge ends constrains the horizontal run lengths of the Z-type path.
  • Cleaning requirements — food-grade and pharmaceutical applications typically require stainless steel construction, smooth internal surfaces, and tool-free access for washdown or dry cleaning.
  • Downstream machine connection — discharge height, outlet width, and chute angle must be matched to the inlet geometry of the weigher, filler, or packaging machine receiving the material.
