Why Small Granules Need Leak-Proof Weighing Before Packaging

The Hidden Cost of Granule Leakage

Small granules are among the most common products processed on automatic weighing lines, yet they are also among the easiest to lose. Rice, seeds, sugar, candy, small pellets, seasoning granules, and chemical granules all share one characteristic: they escape through any gap they encounter. During feeding, transition between surfaces, weighing cycle, and discharge, micro-gaps in hoppers, timing gates, and chutes all become exit points for product that should end up in the bag.

The consequences accumulate quickly. Material waste increases raw material cost per unit. Escaped granules settle on machine surfaces, inside electrical housings, and around sensors, creating cleaning burdens and potential hygiene or safety issues. Portion weight accuracy suffers when each weighing cycle loses a fraction of its intended load. Over a high-speed production shift, even a 0.5% leakage rate on a 1,000 pack-per-hour line translates into significant daily material loss — loss that rarely appears on a single report but consistently erodes margin.

Cleaning time required to remove scattered granules from the machine base, conveyor, and floor adds unplanned downtime that compounds the problem. In food and pharmaceutical environments, contamination from escaped material may also trigger compliance concerns.

How Leak-Proof Weighing Improves Portion Stability

A leak-proof multihead weigher addresses granule loss through tighter hopper-to-hopper matching, controlled discharge timing, and better product flow management throughout the weighing cycle.

Tighter mechanical tolerances between adjacent hoppers reduce the gap through which small particles can escape during transport and weighing. Controlled discharge ensures that when a hopper releases its load, the product travels cleanly into the collection chute rather than scattering at transition points. Better flow control at the feeder and radial trays prevents material from rolling or bouncing off-course before it reaches the weighing hoppers.

The result is a more consistent mass per cycle. When leakage is minimized, the actual product delivered to each weigh head more reliably matches the expected load. This directly stabilizes the combination weighing calculation and produces tighter final bag weights — which means fewer underweight packs rejected by checkweighers downstream, and fewer overweight packs giving away product margin. For customers, consistent bag weight builds product trust and reduces complaints about perceived short fill.

When a Standard Multihead Weigher May Not Be Enough

Standard multihead weighers are designed for a broad range of products, but certain granule characteristics push them beyond their intended operating range:

  • Very small particles: Fine granules, micro-pellets, and small seeds are small enough to pass through gaps that larger products would never reach. Standard hopper tolerances are not designed for particle sizes in the sub-millimeter or low-millimeter range.
  • Mixed particle sizes: When a product contains both large and fine components — for example, a seasoning blend with both flakes and powder — the fine fraction finds exit paths that the coarse fraction cannot.
  • Materials that roll or scatter easily: Round granules, spherical seeds, and smooth pellets have very low friction and will travel further on any inclined or vibrating surface, increasing the likelihood of escaping through gaps or over edges.
  • High-speed lines where small leakage becomes large daily loss: At 60 to 100 packs per minute, even a minor leakage event per cycle compounds into hundreds of grams or kilograms of material loss per shift. High-throughput lines require tighter containment to maintain acceptable material yield.

In these situations, a standard machine's leakage rate may be acceptable on paper but unacceptable in practice once real material cost and cleaning labor are factored in.

How to Match the Weigher with the Full Line

Weighing performance is not determined by the weigher alone. The full line — from elevator feeding through to downstream inspection — affects whether the leak-proof design delivers its intended benefit. A powder and granule packaging line must be designed as a system, not as individual components bolted together.

Elevator feeding speed must match the weigher's cycle demand. If the elevator delivers product too fast or too inconsistently, radial trays overflow and product escapes before it reaches the weigh heads. Timing hopper synchronization between the weigher and the vertical form-fill-seal (VFFS) machine or premade pouch machine below must be calibrated so discharge happens cleanly without spillage at the connection point. Downstream checkweighers and metal detectors must be positioned and timed to match the output rate without creating backpressure or irregular spacing that disrupts the line rhythm.

When the weighing system is designed as part of the full packaging line from the beginning, each component's speed, timing, and physical interface can be matched to the product's actual characteristics — reducing leakage, improving accuracy, and simplifying maintenance across the entire line.

Buyer Checklist

Use the following parameters to define your weigher specification before requesting a quotation:

  • Particle size: Average diameter and size range, including any fine fraction percentage.
  • Bulk density: Affects hopper volume calculation and feed rate design.
  • Target weight per portion: Defines number of heads, bucket volume, and acceptable combination range.
  • Required accuracy: Tolerance in grams or percentage — tighter tolerance may require more weighing heads or slower speed.
  • Product dust level: Dusty products require additional sealing and may affect sensor maintenance.
  • Packaging speed: Packs per minute target determines cycle time requirement.
  • Cleaning method: Dry brush, compressed air, or full washdown — affects material and IP rating selection.
  • Bag type: Pillow bag, gusset bag, premade pouch, or other format — affects discharge chute geometry.
